Boxing history at the Royal Albert Hall
The Royal Albert Hall's long association with both amateur and professional boxing began with its first event in 1918. A tournament between the British Empire and the American Services, it was an undoubted success that led to many more fights and attracted some of the best boxers of that time. Georges Carpentier and Pete Harman were among the top names to compete in the early days of boxing at the Royal Albert Hall, which had not yet staged fights for prize money or wagers, only prize trophies or cups. The first contests with prize money at stake came in 1925 during a booming period for the hall. It had never seen such takings as the £14,000 from the Georges Carpentier vs. George Cooke bout of 1922! The hall was seen as a great venue for the sport, with no spectator far from the ring, which could also be made smaller to produce more hard-hitting scraps. More legendary fights were to come, like the appearance of the infamous Kray twins in the ring and Muhammed Ali's farewell to London. Other giants of the sport to fight here have included Lennox Lewis, Prince Naseem and Frank Bruno.
