Nilufer Yanya Tickets
Making her debut on the music scene as a 21-year-old, Nilufer Yanya is a singer and songwriter who comes from London. She has been championed in the music press, notably the New Musical Express, which talked about her as a possible future star after she had shared her first track of 2017, a song called “The Florist”. This track is a typical example of Yanya's lyrical style, in which she puts some distance between herself and the song by writing from the point of view of another. Her lyrics are still truthfully written, but Yanya frequently chooses to write as a character, rather than from her own direct personal experience.
Nilufer Yanya's musical style
Part of Yanya's style with music is that she has no immediately definable genre that she chooses to operate in. As a genre-hopping artist, Yanya has said that she was a musician well before she became a singer. The arrangement of “The Florist” – her take on a relationship break-up song – shows off her skills as a musician who can operate in more than one style. Although the track starts off with lightly plucked guitars and some jazzy chords, it soon builds up to a thunderous chorus, which is full of indie, rock drums and crunching chords.
Music critics in the UK have said that Yanya's style is reminiscent of artists such as King Krule or even Kate Tempest, here and there. There are occasional touches of jazz harmony as well as unexpected diversions into trip hop, once in a while. Perhaps this blend of sounds is representative of Yanya's parentage. She is of Turkish, Irish and Bajan extraction.
The one constant with Yanya's sound is her voice. Of a low register, it is husky and beautifully sparse at times. The raw vocals she produces would be equally suited to soul or even to lo-fi electronica if she wished to work in either genre. She was taught how to play the guitar by Dave Okumu, known for his work with The Invisible.
Nilufer Yanya's live career
Following the release of “Small Crimes”, in which Yanya voices the ideas and views of a small-time criminal, she was selected to open shows for some higher profile acts. For example, Yanya won support slots for Broken Social Scene, in 2017. Yanya plays guitar at many of her gigs, as well as singing. In addition to opening shows for other bands, Yanya has headlined a number of gigs, mostly in her home city of London.
