Originally known as the Carolina RailHawks, the franchise debuted in 2007 with the USL First Division. In its first-ever season, the club made the league playoffs and qualified for the semifinals of the US Open Cup by beating the Chicago Fire of the MLS. After the introduction of Martin Rennie as coach, North Carolina earned a berth in the league finals, where it fell to the Puerto Rico Islanders. The club joined the North American Soccer League in 2011 and continued to prove its mettle in the US Open Cup by beating the LA Galaxy from the MLS three straight years between 2012 and 2014.
