North Texas Mean Green Football TicketsNorth Texas acquired the name Mean Green in 1966 in honor of its imposing defense, led by consensus All-American and future NFL Hall of Famer “ ”Mean“ ” Joe Greene. It replaced the school’s former name, the Eagles. The University of North Texas, then known as North Texas State, established its football program in 1913. The hiring of Odus Mitchell in 1946 would begin the school’s most prosperous era with 122 wins and 10 conference titles as the school moved between the Lone Star Conference, the Gulf Coast Conference and the Missouri Valley Conference. Future Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry would take over the program in 1973. He led the Mean Green to a 10-1 record in 1977 and a 9-2 record in 1978 before departing for the University of Iowa. Since 2000, North Texas has been a semi-regular fixture at the New Orleans Bowl and the Heart of Dallas Bowl. In 2013, the school switched to Conference USA, which is made up of members located throughout the Southeast.
