In addition to the Huskies basketball team, the arena is also the home of the university's hockey teams. Originally opened in 1910, the Matthews Arena is over a century old and is one of the oldest multipurpose athletic buildings still in current use in the United States. Multiple renovations throughout the decades have kept the athletic building current. In addition to new video scoreboards and improved seating to enhance the live-viewing experience, the renovations included completely renovated lobby and concessions stands. The Northeastern Huskies are mainly coached by Head Coach Bill Coen and associate Head Coach Chris Markwood. From Bill Coen's 14 seasons as the head coach of Northeastern, Coen is widely acknowledged as a coach who is able to evaluate and develop talented players under his team. In 2018, he was named as the CAA Coach of the Year. There have been 19 of Coen's former players who have received professional contracts after being coached at Northeastern by Coen. Currently, Coen ranks third on CAA Conference's coaches, with the most regular-season and tournament game wins. Since his time at Northeastern, Coen has accumulated over 224 career wins. Chris Markwood is the associate head coach of the Northeastern Huskies.
