Oklahoma! was one of the first musicals to successfully mix story and musical numbers cohesively, and has since led the way for the advancement of a truly American art form over the last century. It hasn't been without its controversies, though. When the musical was adapted for the silver screen in 1955, the director wanted to cast James Dean as Curly, but the playwrights decided against his casting in favour of the more popular - and conventional - Gordon MacRae.
Ashley Day leads the cast with his representation of Curly, the main character of the show. He has completely embraced the lifestyle of the touring musical, with some of his more popular performances being in High School Musical and The Book of Mormon. He is joined by his love interest, Laurey, portrayed by Charlotte Wakefield. She has experience with film and television, but gained broader attention through her theatrical work in Spring Awakening, Mamma Mia and The Sound of Music, which she performed at Regent Park's open air theatre.
The first instance of Oklahoma! was in the book Green Grow the Lilacs by Lynn Riggs. Soon after, Rogers and Hammerstein decided to create a musical with a flowing story and musical numbers perfectly integrated into one show. The enthusiastic response from the musical was great enough to keep the show in a loop of revivals since its first staging in the 1940s, and helped pave the way for more popular works from the writing team. Throughout their careers, Rogers and Hammerstein have made additional great contributions to Broadway history with works like Cinderella, The Sound of Music, South Pacific and many others.
ProducersRachel Kavanaugh and Drew McOnie lead the production after a string of many successes. Well known in the United Kingdom theatre world, the producers have crafted their versions of The King and I, Fiddler on the Roof and many others. With the beautiful execution of their past work, there is no doubt that this tour of Oklahoma! will be one to remember."
