Fifteen years after the Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny teams folded, Orlando City SC has put central Florida back on the Major League Soccer map. Local soccer fans were glad to have a home team to cheer at the Citrus Bowl Stadium, and anticipation is building over the prospect of making it to the Eastern Conference Playoff Championships in the next season. Home games often sell out the 60,000-seat stadium, and there is a waiting list for season tickets, making Orlando City SC seats a hot commodity in the sports world.
Orlando City SC trivia
Though the formation of Orlando City SC was announced in November 2013, the team didn't play its inaugural game until the 2015 season. Unfortunately, Orlando City SC didn't win against New York City FC in that first matchup, but the team quickly evened their record with an exciting win over Houston Dynamo in their second game.
Orlando City SC has a coalition of fan clubs that come together each game day to cheer on the team. Two of the most active clubs include the Ruckus and Iron Lion Firm.
In addition, mascot Kingston the Lion attends every home game. He can be found cheering at one of the city's many local pubs during away games.
In 2017, the team moves to a brand new Orlando stadium that is specifically designed to be the loudest venue in Major League Soccer. Architectural tweaks such as a low, slanted roofline amplify crowd noise to create a livelier fan experience.
Orlando City SC roster
A lineup of skilled professionals ensures each Orlando SC game is a nail-biter. One of the team's most valuable assets is Forward Cyle Larin. Larin led his team in the 2016 season with the most goals (14), the highest number of shots (73) and the No. 1 position for shots on goal (33).
Midfielder Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, better known as Kaka, is another strong resource for Orlando SC. In 2016, Kaka scored 9 goals, had 10 assists and took 62 shots - 29 of which were shots on goal.
Joe Bendik, acquired in a trade with Toronto FC in December 2015, has been a strong goalkeeper for Orlando City SC. Out of 178 shots faced, he saved 114. Bendik has five shutout games to his credit.
Orlando SC is fortunate to have the leadership of Head Coach Jason Kreis, who has a long history of MLS success on his resume. Kreis made history as the first American-born player to be honored with the MLS MVP award, and though he left the Dallas team in 2004, his record for most games played (247) still stands.
