Oteil Burbridge background
Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Oteil Burbridge was encouraged as a child to learn classical and jazz music. He was taught a variety of instruments, including drums, clarinet, violin and trumpet. As he got older, bass guitar and drums became his favorites. When he was a teenager, Burbridge being playing with many different bands that spanned the range from R&B to rock. As an adult, he has lived in Virginia Beach, Atlanta and Florida and been active in the music scene wherever he's lived.
One of his first gigs working alongside other well-known professionals was as a bass guitarist with Aquarium Rescue Unit. The band combined elements of bluegrass, rock, blues, jazz and funk, and it found a way to showcase each individual performer's talents. The group eventually disbanded, but it did afford Burbridge the opportunity to boost his reputation. He has since played with Dead & Company, Les Brers, the Allman Brothers and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, among others. His time with the Tedeschi Trucks Band was quite successful as they performed at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival and toured the country. The band released two albums before Burbridge left them in 2012.

In 2012, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. This recognized his 17 years with the Allman Brothers. In 2003 and 2004, along with his bandmates, he was nominated for two Grammy Awards. Later in his career with his fellow musicians in the Tedeschi Trucks Band, he won a Grammy Award for Best Blues Album in 2011.
