The infamous composer of ballets, operas and overtures is alive and kicking, at least in spirit, in the one-man show Our Great Tchaikovsky. The genius-imbued and sometimes controversial life of the Russian composer plays out on the stage, though the show itself is at times somber and quite realistic. The creative flare of it all cuts through the realism somewhat, though, and audiences flock to the program in every city it plays.
Hershey Felder, a Canadian actor and musician, depicts Tchaikovsky's life and legacy, which includes both creative triumphs and the struggle of a closet homosexual in 19th century Russia. The show travels through time, considering Tchaikovsky with a lens contemporary to his time as well as modern times, and it also includes some of the composer's most famous and iconic music. The program itself lasts about 105 minutes and doesn't have an intermission.
Our Great Tchaikovsky history
Hershey Felder, who specializes in exactly this type of concept, wrote the show. He previously wrote and performed in shows dedicated to Beethoven, Chopin, Berlin, Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. His previous shows include MAESTRO, As I Knew Him, George Gershwin Alone and Franz Liszt in Musik.
As Bernstein was likely bisexual, Our Great Tchaikovsky isn't the first time Felder brings sexual orientation as a factor in telling the story of a great musician. The new play does tackle sexuality in a more difficult context, however, as 19th century Russia was quite intolerant and homosexuals faced danger and persecution. The show also includes a lot of information about the composer's life, including his marriage and his mysterious death.
The show began with a stint at the Wallis Theater before touring across the country. In addition to Felder as writer, actor, vocalist and even piano player, the show draws on numerous talents. Trevor Hay directs it, Erik Carstensen manages sound design, Christopher Ash designed lighting and projection and Abigail Caywood contributed to costumes. Felder himself designed scenery elements, and a lot of effort went into ensuring authenticity to the appropriate time periods. Heralded as powerful and emotional experience by the San Diego Union-Tribune, Our Great Tchaikovsky received positive reviews from many top entertainment publications.
Music weaves its way through the program. Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Swan Lake make obvious brief appearances, as do other piano concerti, overtures, operas and symphonic works from the composer. They do so in brief via one or two snippets or a single song, leaving room for Felder to weave the rest of the tale.
