Casino and Gaming Trivia
There are many trivia tidbits when it comes to the games played at casinos. For instance, did you know that Dead Man's Hand is used to define a poker hand set with two black aces and two black eights? According to lore, Wild Bill Hickock was holding these cards when he was shot.
Then there's the history of a casino favorite, poker. Poker is noted as being invented in Europe in the 15th century. One theory is that it originated from the German game, Pochspiel. While the French believe it comes from their game, Poque. It is believed that an English actor, Joseph Crowell, brought the game to America at the start of the 19th century. But rather than being played in casinos, the game was used to help U.S. Civil War troops relax.
Additionally, poker is responsible for the invention of everyone's favorite lunch staple... the sandwich. As the story goes, the Earl of Sandwich was so absorbed by poker games that he loathed getting up from the table to eat. So to save time, he came up with the idea of putting a slice of meat in between two slices of bread. And the rest, my friends, is history!
