Pacific Tigers Basketball TicketsPacific plays in the difficult West Coast Conference, which means that it must play six games each season against the likes of Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary's. This makes for entertaining games for the fans but difficult matchups for the team. The Tigers team has a storied rivalry against Saint Mary's that has spanned two different conferences. Coach Damon Stoudamire is just beginning to put his stamp on the program in his fourth year at the helm of the team. In 2019-20, Pacific has nine new players, and the team will certainly look different from what it has in past years. The Tigers team has five transfers suiting up this season. Who was one of the more notable players in Pacific Tigers' program history?NBA fans may remember the name Michael Olowokandi. He was the first overall pick in the NBA draft in 1998; it's exceedingly rare for a player from a mid-major school to get picked so high. Although he did not live up to expectations as a pro, Olowokandi was a dominant force in the middle during his collegiate career. During his senior season, he averaged a double-double and was one of the nation's leading shot blockers. Olowokandi is the only Pacific Tigers player since 1960 to be drafted by the NBA.
Who is the head coach of the Pacific Tigers?Michael Olowokandi is not the only NBA connection that the Pacific Tigers have. Damon Stoudamire, who had a lengthy NBA career and won the Rookie of the Year Award for the 1995-1996 season, is the head coach of the Tigers. He took over as coach of the Tigers in 2016 and gives the program instant credibility that has translated into recruiting wins. The team is still fighting to break through to the upper echelons of the West Coast Conference, however.
In what conference do the Pacific Tigers play? The Tigers' team is a part of the West Coast Conference. The WCC is known as a hotbed for basketball as several teams annually earn NCAA Tournament berths, which is rare for a mid-major conference. In fact, most conferences get only one berth. Before joining the WCC in 2013, the Tigers competed in the Big West Conference where the team won five conference tournament championships.
What is the Tigers' NCAA Tournament track record? The Pacific Tigers' team has had surprising success when the team made the NCAA Tournament. In 2004 and 2005, the Tigers pulled off first-round tournament upsets and reached the Round of 32. Before that, Pacific reached the Sweet Sixteen three times between 1966 and 1971, making it all the way to the Elite Eight in 1967. The Tigers last made the NCAA Tournament in 2013. This was also the team's last season in the Big West.
Where do the Pacific Tigers play their home games? The Tigers' home arena is the Alex G. Spanos Center and is named for the late owner of the Los Angeles Chargers. The Spanos Center seats 6,150 basketball fans. The Tigers will draw a decent crowd when conference powers Gonzaga and St. Mary's come to town.
What was the Pacific Tigers' record last season? In 2018-19, the Tigers finished with a 14-18 record. Against tough WCC competition, the team was 4-14 in the conference. This was the second straight season that the Tigers finished with the identical overall record. The Tigers had lost Miles Reynolds, a key player the year before, to a graduate transfer, and the team was in a state of flux last season.
