Papa Roach rose to prominence on the new wave of alternative rock in the 1990s. With its dark overtones and hard edge, the band has dabbled in rap, punk and heavy metal. Some of its influences include Led Zeppelin, Queen, Metallica and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. At its start, Papa Roach was composed of lead singer and founder Jacoby Shaddix, guitarist Jerry Horton, bass guitarist Will James, trombonist Ben Luther and drummer Dave Buckner. The band took its name from a nickname bestowed upon Shaddix's step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch.
Papa Roach first formed in 1993 when Shaddix and Buckner were attending the same high school in Vacaville, Calif. They recruited the rest of the band from nearby areas of the state. The result of their collaboration was two extended-play albums: Potatoes for Christmas in 1994 and Caca Bonita in 1995. The band released its debut full-length studio album, Old Friends from Young Years, on Feb. 4, 1997, and it came to the attention of the DreamWorks record label. The release of the band's sophomore album, Infest, propelled it to stardom in 2000. On the strength of the hit singles "Last Resort" and "Broken Homes," the album sold more than 3 million copies in the United States alone. At the same time, the band transitioned away from rap metal and toward more heavy metal. Papa Roach followed on this success with the gold-certified Lovehatetragedy in 2002 and the million-seller Getting Away with Murder in 2004. The band has also appeared on the WWF Tough Enough album and Avengers Assemble, a complementary album to the hit Marvel film. The band collaborated with Black Eyed Peas on the song "Anxiety" and with the hip-hop group N.E.R.D. on "Don't Look Back." On the awards circuit in 2001, Papa Roach received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, while the single "Broken Home" was nominated for Best Music Video, Short Form. Papa Roach has appeared at the Rock Allegiance festival, the Sound Wave Festival, Woodstock en Beauce in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Ozzfest, ShipRocked and many others.
