Despite the inherent proximity of their birthplaces, Broadway and punk share very little with one another. But somehow they’ve come together for audiences now clamoring for Passing Strange tickets. The story is a wild, whirling tale with rock songs—complete with electric guitars and synths—that most musical fans won’t expect. But here’s the secret: It’s not written just for musical fans.
The story is narrated by a character named Stew, an African-American man who, growing up in L.A., turned to Zen Buddhism and punk, then later to European café life. Throughout it all, he learns lessons, grows up, and tries to find his own voice. But much of the time, he found he simply didn’t fit in. Whether poking fun at Boho culture or his family, this is a show that entertains.
Don’t expect a typical musical with “Passing Strange.” Theater tickets are available for plenty of traditional shows with the same conventional songs and stories you may be used to. This is definitely something off the beaten path. But if that’s more to your liking, you’ll be well-rewarded by going out on a limb and trying something new.
