Pegasus World Cup Invitational TicketsThe Pegasus World Cup Invitational inaugurated a novel concept in horse racing when it was first introduced in 2017. Originally a race that was divided into ownership shares, it is now a free entry race with one of the largest purses in North American racing. Now, 4-year-olds and up race 1 1/8 miles over the dirt track at Gulfstream in an early-season test. For fans, this is one of their first chances to see champion 3-year-olds kick off their senior campaign. Gulfstream Park has added a turf race to the program so fans can see champions run on the grass as well. The Pegasus World Cup Invitational now draws horses from around the world, and it has become the flagship U.S. race outside of the Breeders Cup. While Gulfstream has made numerous changes to the race over its short history, it is now ensconced as a premier Grade I stakes race that draws the early-season buzz. What was the record purse given out in this race? The first version of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational offered a purse of $12 million. Each racehorse owner purchased a share in the race for $1 million. They were then entitled to a portion of the profits of the event. The 2018 race offered a record $16 million purse, although this record was recently passed by the Saudi Cup. The purse dropped to $9 million in 2019 and again to $3 million in 2020, but the Pegasus is still the richest horse race in the United States that is not held as part of the Breeders' Cup.
Who won the initial running of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational? In 2017, the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Invitational featured another matchup between archrivals California Chrome and Arrogate. California Chrome was a Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, but Arrogate was a horse that got better as he aged. This time, California Chrome did not have what it took to keep pace with Arrogate and was pulled up as Arrogate drew away from the field and set a new track record.
When did Gulfstream make the World Cup a two-race event? In 2019, Gulfstream decided to make the Pegasus World Cup a dirt and a turf racing event. The track took what was previously known as the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap and rebranded it as the Pegasus World Cup Turf. The initial purse was $8 million, but the race now runs at $1 million which is still an attractive purse that draws a world-class roster of turf horses.
What makes the Pegasus World Cup different than other major races? In 2020, for the first time, the Pegasus World Cup instituted a requirement that horses running in the event compete without the benefit of Lasix, a medication that prevents harmful respiratory bleeding in horses running at high speed, which nearly all horses rely on to run. This demonstrates a commitment from track ownership to animal safety and provides a level playing field for all the horses racing.
What is the most dominant performance in the race's history? Many would argue that Arrogate's track record was the sharpest performance. However, Mucho Gusto staked his own claim with his 2020 run at the track. Mucho Gusto stalked the pace while the two front-runners dueled each other down the backstretch. He swept to the front at the far turn and then away from the field to win by almost five lengths with Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle. Get your Pegasus World Cup Invitational tickets at StubHub.
