Who coaches the Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling team?Former four-time NCAA and 2004 Olympic Champion Cael Sanderson is head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions wrestling team. With more than 100 wins, he is the only wrestler in NCAA Division I history to be undefeated in official matches. Sanderson accepted the Lions' coaching position in 2009 after leading the Iowa State University Cyclones to three Big 12 titles and an NCAA runner-up finish. Penn State soon after earned its place among the most dominant dynasties in NCAA sports history. The Nittany Lions won four straight conference and NCAA national team titles from 2011 through 2014. After narrowly missing another national title in 2015, Penn State won another four straight titles from 2016 through 2019. A 10th could come soon. The Nittany Lions also won national titles in 1953 and 1921. But their recent domination is exceptional. In 2019, Sanderson was quoted as saying Penn State's success in this sport shows student wrestlers that "if you go to Penn State, this is a place where you can get better" and "if you’re good, you can become great here."

Retherford won two Hodge Trophies as the nation’s most impressive wrestler while winning three straight national titles at 149 pounds. Nolf won three at 157 pounds and is a contender for the US Olympic team. Ruth dominated the Big Ten’s 174-pound weight class by never losing a conference match during his four years at Penn State. He finished with three straight national titles. Nickal won two NCAA titles at 184 pounds and capped his college career with another at 197 pounds.
