John Mayer grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut, and started playing guitar at 13 after watching Michael J. Fox perform as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. A neighbor's Stevie Ray Vaughan cassette sent him digging into the blues, and he worked backward through the genre to Buddy Guy, B.B. King, and Albert King. He enrolled at Berklee College of Music in 1997, left after two semesters, and moved to Atlanta, where he built a following in coffee houses and clubs before a 2000 South by Southwest set led to a deal with Aware Records.
Signed through Aware, an imprint of Columbia Records, John Mayer released his debut EP, Inside Wants Out, in 1999. His first two studio albums, Room for Squares (2001) and Heavier Things (2003), made him a fixture on adult pop radio. "Your Body Is a Wonderland" won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 45th Grammy Awards, and Heavier Things reached the top of the Billboard 200. He then moved away from acoustic music, forming the John Mayer Trio in 2005 with bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan, a shift toward blues and rock that shaped his 2006 album Continuum.
Continuum was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 49th Grammy Awards. John Mayer followed it with Battle Studies (2009), the Laurel Canyon-inspired Born and Raised (2012), Paradise Valley (2013), The Search for Everything (2017), and the 1980s soft rock of Sob Rock (2021). In 2015 he joined former The Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart to form Dead & Company. Rolling Stone ranked him at number 61 on its 2023 list of the 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
