From Genesis to Revelation
Born in Chiswick, England, on January 30th, 1951, Phil Collins showed proficiency as a drummer from an early age. He had initial aspirations to be an actor but turned toward music once he joined the band Hickory, which later changed its name to the Flaming Youth. In 1970, his career had a major breakthrough when he joined the band Genesis as drummer and backup singer. He later became lead singer in 1975 after Peter Gabriel left the band. In 1978, Collins embarked on a solo career while continuing to play for Genesis. His debut solo album, Face Value, came out on February 13th, 1981. With millions of copies sold, the album became an instant success. Collins would release a total of eight solo albums between 1981 and 2010. In 1989, his fourth album, …But Seriously, reached No. 1 in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and several European charts. As a solo artist, Phil Collins has received 26 nominations from the Grammy Awards. He has won eight times, including the 1986 Album of the Year award for No Jacket Required and the 1991 Record of the Year for "Another Day in Paradise." His 1999 song "You'll Be in My Heart" from the movie Tarzan took home both the Academy Award for Best Original Song – his third nomination in this category – and a Golden Globe Award. He has also won six Brit Awards, including three for Best British Male Artist.
