Philadelphia Wings TicketsThough the Philadelphia Wings are a young indoor lacrosse team, they are building on a long tradition of professional lacrosse in the City of Brotherly Love. That’s because the most recent iteration of a pro lacrosse team there goes back to 1987, when a team with that name began playing in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League (There was one other name change for the league before it arrived at its current one.) Philadelphia is a city with many lacrosse fans, and 25,000 youths play the sport in the region. After the the league was formed, the Wings and the New Jersey Saints christened it by playing the first game on Jan. 10, 1987, in New Jersey. The Wings lost 11-8. Teams that were precursors of the current Wings have won three lacrosse championships, with the first being on April 7, 1989, before a home crowd of 16,042. When was the revamped team founded? The year was 2017, and the first home game was on Dec. 15, 2018, before a crowd of 11,023. Not only did the game introduce spectators to the players, but it was also the opportunity to pay tribute to prior teams. The numbers of Tom Marechek, Dallas Eliuk and Jake Bergey, three retired players, were raised as well as championship banners for the 1989 Major Indoor Lacrosse League titlelists and for the 1994 and 1995 NLL winning teams. On that opening night, the team lost to the Buffalo Bandits 17-10.
What’s a National Lacrosse League game like?It combines aspects of Canadian box lacrosse, which is played indoors on an ice hockey rink, with American field lacrosse that’s played outdoors on grass or turf. NLL teams play 18 weekend games on an ice hockey rink that’s covered with artificial turf. The hockey glass and rink boards stay in place. Each team has six players: five runners and a goalie. The game moves fast because a team has just 30 seconds to score when it gets possession of the ball. Face-offs are exciting, too. In the 2018-2019 season, Wings player Trevor Baptiste led the league by winning 362 face-offs. If, after four 15-minute quarters, the game is tied, it goes into sudden-death overtime.
Who are the Wings’ leading scorers?Though the top position will vary by season and injury, likely to be battling it out to be king of the leaderboard are Brett Hickey and Kevin Crowley. Other players who are good at making their shots on goal count are Josh Currier, Cory Vitarelli and Matt Rambo.
What were some notable moments in recent games? In a January 2020 game that the Philadelphia Wings won 18-10 over the Vancouver Warriors of the West Division, Josh Currier had eight points (4 goals and 4 assists; Blaze Riorden had seven points (3 goals and 4 assists); and Matt Rambo had 4 assists. Kevin Crowley scored three times and his second goal was the 300th of his career. In another January game, the team lost to the Georgia Swarm 12-11 after an altercation between Crowley and opposing player Joel White sent both to the penalty box. In addition to the Swarm, the Wings’ division rivals are the New England Black Wolves and the New York Riptide. The Wings and the Riptide have a rivalry that goes back to the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, as the league was named from 1988 through 1997.
What does Kevin Crowley have to say about his 300th goal?He says he got a perfectly passed ball from Josh Currier. He caught it from behind over his right shoulder on the run. Then he faked far side and threw it in near side because the goalie was leaning to the far side. He adds that it was the greatest goal of his career, not because of the milestone he reached but for how the play unfolded.
How long is the NLL season? It lasts from mid-December to mid-April every year.
