The history of the Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers are one of the oldest teams in the NFL, having begun play in 1933. The Steelers did not experience success for much of their early history. In fact, they qualified for only one playoff berth in their first 40 years in the league. That all began to change in the 1970s under coach Chuck Noll. In 1972, the Steelers began an incredible run of football that still continues today. Pittsburgh won four Super Bowls under Noll and one each under coaches Bill Cowher and Tomlin. The Steelers have had only three head coaches in the past 50 years, and their coaches achieve iconic status in the city.
