Since their formation in Boston, Mass. in 1986, the Pixies have been a staple of the alternative rock circuit. Headed by vocalist Black Francis and known primarily for their raucous instrumental solos, they've tapped into the mainstream consciousness with tunes such as "Where is My Mind," "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven." As the members came from various musical backgrounds and possessed eclectic tastes, the band's sound is unique, but at least two have named Iggy Pop as inspiration. Critics have referred to the music as "an unorthodox marriage of surf music and punk rock." The Pixies have been performing and touring extensively for over three decades and regularly play at venues and festivals around the world.
Let Them Tell You a (Gigantic) Story
Francis met guitarist Joey Santiago while both were students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After recruiting Kim Deal as bassist and David Lovering to take over the drum kit, the quartet began to play shows in the Boston area, later signing a contract with indie label 4AD. They released three albums-Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa and Doolittle-between 1987 and 1989, but a growing rift between the band's members caused a split in 1993. A little more than a decade later, the Pixies reunited for a full tour, which included four nights at London's Brixton Academy-the fastest-selling run in the theater's history. During this reunion tour, they also played at a number of music festivals, including Lollapalooza and the Newport Folk Festival.

What can I expect from a Pixies concert?
As the majority of the Pixies' oeuvre is lively and upbeat with an emphasis on percussion, you can expect a live performance to be a rousing experience. On the rare occasions when the band does take it down a notch-for the haunting melodies of "Where is My Mind," for instance-devoted audience members are likely to make up for the difference by vocalizing their appreciation.
Who are the current members of the Pixies?
Bassist Deal left the band in 2013, and the remaining members found a replacement in Paz Lenchantin the following year. She was announced as a permanent member of the band in July 2016. Francis, Santiago and Lovering have all continued in their respective roles since the band's inception.
How long does a Pixies concert usually last?
The average Pixies song runs shorter than the majority of the cuts you'll find on mainstream radio, so they can get away with plugging a lot of hits into the set without running over. Expect the show to last about an hour and a half from start to finish, longer if you're interested in the opening act.
What does a Pixies setlist look like?
"Monkey Gone to Heaven" and "Caribou" are ubiquitous at Pixies concerts as is the evergreen "Where is My Mind." Lenchantin has been taking up the lead vocals for some of the band's latest material, namely "All I Think About Now" from Head Carrier, the band's 2016 release. Though the Pixies have been in the public consciousness for more than 30 years, their discography is still somewhat limited, so you can expect more of the same for the near future.
