The story behind the 80s Cinderella fairy-tale
This modern retelling of the Cinderella 'rags to riches' story finds Vivian Ward, an attractive sex worker who stops to help a very lost billionaire corporate banker Edward Lewis find his way. After a flirtatious exchange, Vivian impresses Edward so completely that he hires her to be his companion while in Beverly Hills for a series of social engagements and invites her to stay with him at the tony Beverly Wilshire Hotel. While there, Vivian learns to become a lady and Edward learns that some things are more important than money. Pretty Woman joins Hairspray, Groundhog Day and Footloose as other 1980s feature films that became musicals. Vivian's transformation from street walker to society debutante is the central theme of the musical and embodies the 'rags to riches' motif popular among romantic comedies. In fact, the musical is based on the 1980s film of the same name that became a hit with moviegoers around the world. Discover the musical version for yourself. Relive the movie magic on stage- live!
Apart from the two main characters the musical is fairly faithfully to the original movie, the biggest exception being the musical score. International music star Bryan Adams wrote several original songs including "Anywhere but Here", "Something about Her" and it's signature "You're Beautiful" which underpin the script from the late Garry Marshall who directed the 1980s blockbuster. A great supporting cast delivers timely comic relief including Vivian's boisterous best friend Kate and tutor/concierge Barney who also doubles as "Everyman" the narrator while besotted bellhop Giulio makes his mark in some of the funniest moments on stage. Another homage to the movie are several memorable costume items including Vivian's thigh-high stiletto boots and the iconic red, off the shoulder gown that deserves its own star. All of which suggests that audiences who enjoyed the movie should find the stage version delightful. The musical premiered in Chicago and advance tickets were sold out long before opening night and after a limited run made its debut on Broadway. Relive the magic of the movie enhanced with chorus and choreography live on stage. Pretty Woman tickets are ready now to buy or sell via StubHub.
