Progressive Legends Classic Schedule
Some of the best teams in college basketball are prepared to hit the court this fall for the 2014 Progressive Legends Classic, which is one of the most exciting basketball tournaments in the sport of college hoops. The Progressive Legends Classic begins each November at the beginning of the college basketball season. A pair of regional games are played between four programs from some of the country's most prestigious conferences, competing in championship rounds at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. The rest will engage in round-robin battles at another site, meaning that every participating team is given at least four games to play.
In 2014, the four host teams include the Villanova Wildcats, Michigan Wolverines, VCU Rams and the Oregon Ducks. These four teams will match up over the course of a two-day period set to be November 24th and 25th. The Villanova Wildcats have had some great teams over the years, and they'll be led by head coach Jay Wright. The Michigan Wolverines have put together some great seasons as of late, reaching the National Championship Game just a couple of years ago. The VCU Rams have taken their program to the next level since the hiring of Shaka Smart as the head coach of the team. As for the Oregon Ducks, they're always a contender out in the Pac-12, and they'll be looking to shine in this tournament setting.
The tournament isn't only about showing off the current crop of future stars who might go on to play in the NBA and become national and international stars. It's also an opportunity to pay tribute to some of the great former players and coaches to have had an impact on the game. These 'Legends' are what truly give the tournament its name, and several greats are showcased to the crowd and given their moment in the spotlight each year.
Progressive Legends Classic History
The tournament has only been around since 2007, but it's already made its mark. In those seven years since its inception, there have been six different winners, with only Pittsburgh winning it twice, in 2008 and 2012. Texas won the inaugural tournament, and since then, Florida, Syracuse, Vanderbilt and Indiana have all tasted success. When you look down the list of participating teams each year, however, you quickly realize why the winners and finalists are different each year. It's because the competing teams are different each year as well. This helps give the tournament a real flavor, rather than having the same teams competing year after year. Past participants include Stanford, Michigan State, Georgia Tech, Washington State, UC Irvine, UCLA, La Verne and Cornell. Each year, more and more players seem to gain recognition and make their way to the NBA Draft as well. Back in 2008 and 2009, there were only two each year, then there were five and four in 2010 and 2011, respectively. By the time the 2012 draft came around, eight players from the Progressive Legends Classic made the cut, while in 2013, there were as many as 11. In that year, the tournament showcased the number two, three and four picks, so there was a lot of quality on display. The Pittsburgh Panthers participated twice in the tournament -- 2008 and 2013 -- and won both times. Other past winners include the Texas Longhorns, Syracuse Orange, Florida Gators, Vanderbilt Commodores and the Indiana Hoosiers.
Getting out to the Progressive Legends Classic really is a must for anyone interested in college basketball, but it's always more than that. It's an opportunity to see future legends and old legends of the game, in particular, receive their deserved recognition. Fans have the opportunity to enjoy several on-court activities and performances, such as national anthem performances, halftime performances, color guard, cheer and dance team performances, fan tunnels, anthem lines and more. If it's your birthday, you might just get a special mention as well. Being there in person for an incredible event like this and being able to see some of the top college basketball players in the game is a real treat. Make sure to be a part of it all this season.
