The Public Theater has been a non-profit theater serving the public since its inception in 1954 by Joseph Papp as the Shakespeare Workshop. The Workshop moved into its current residence in 1967, a building founded by John Jacob Astor and designed by Alexander Saeltzer. The building at the time was at risk of demolition, but the city council purchased the building, which was converted into a theater by Giorgio Cavaglieri and awarded landmark status. There are five performance theaters in the Public Theater: Anspacher Theater, Martinson Theater, Newman Theater, LuEsther Hall and Shiva Theater. The mission of the Public Theater remains that of being a cultural force for providing unique artistic experiences to all. The Public Theater has received numerous Tony, Obie, Lortel, New York Drama Critics' Circle, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle awards and several Pulitzer Prizes.
