Pukkelpop, Belgium's most famous music festival
Pukkelpop has become one of the most well-known and popular festivals in Europe, especially for the stellar band line-ups that it has offered every year since its inception in 1985. It takes place in the woodlands of Belgium and has always been one of the most vibrant musical events on the calendar. You'll never be disappointed when you buy or sell Pukkelpop tickets on StubHub – every year has brought an enviable list of some of the world's most legendary performers.
Introducing international cult bands to Europe every year
Pukkelpop had small beginnings, but its spirit and attitudes were set by the bands and artists chosen for that very first show. British activist and spoken word performer Anne Clark headlined, playing to a small crowd of 3,000 – a far cry from the 130,000-plus fans that have attended more recent editions of Pukkelpop. Over the years, some of the world's most successful bands have made a point of stopping off at the festival every year. It's where Nirvana broke their "Nevermind" album live on stage in 1991 and holds the distinction of being a festival that both introduced the Pixies to mainland Europe and hosted the fabled Boston band's reunion in the 2010s. It's had everyone from Split Enz to Crowded House, as each generation of the festival has attracted new audiences and introduced the latest international bands on European soil. Other cult superstars that have graced one of its many stages have included the some of the most important alternative bands of their time, like Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, New Order and Placebo. So don't waste any time in getting Pukkelpop tickets as soon as you see them going on sale.
Cultural exchanges with music festivals in other countries
Pukkelpop found a permanent home near the small town of Kiewit and was still there in 2010 when it staged its most ambitious edition yet, the 25th anniversary of Pukkelpop. Some of the biggest bands that have played there in the past performed over the course of the three days, with highlights coming from Euro electro space cadets Daft Punk and the usual frenetic energy of melodic metal maestros, Iron Maiden. The festival's organisers have also gone to unusual lengths to bring some of the world's less known but more interesting artists to their stage. They've formed alliances with other festivals around the world in the form of what they call "cultural exchanges", where Dutch and Belgian artists get to play at festivals in other countries and locals from those places appear at Pukkelpop. The most successful of these collaborations has been with the Oppikoppi Festival in South Africa, where many artists sing in their native Afrikaans, a close relative of Dutch. These artists have been very well received at Pukkelpop as a result. The long and short of it is that Pukkelpop tickets offer a cultural experience like few other festivals that you'll find on StubHub, so keep a good lookout for them.
