Queen originally formed in 1970 in London, England, when a young Freddie Mercury encouraged the members of his favorite band at the time, Smile, to take him on as their new lead singer and explore incorporating more extravagant recording and staging methods into their rock and roll music and performances. They released their eponymous first record in 1973 but didn't hit the charts in their home country until the 1974 release of their second album, Queen II. Their subsequent two albums, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera, both released in 1975, gave them international acclaim. A single off the latter album, "Bohemian Rhapsody," hit No. 1 for nine weeks and helped to spearhead the introduction of music videos into the mainstream.
