The American rapper Rakim is considered to be one of the most influential rappers of all time. MTV named his album "Paid In Full" the greatest hip hop album of all time, and he was also listed as being one of the Greatest MCs of All Time by MTV. The icon began his music career when he was part of the hip hop duo "Eric B. & Rakim," with whom he released several successful albums. During the height of their popularity, Eric B. & Rakim were one of the most influential hip hop duos in the music industry. In fact, they were listed as number 3 on About.com's list of the 10 Greatest Hip-Hop Duos of All Time, and they were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hal of Fame in 2011.
Eric B. & Rakim's first track that they recorded together was "Eric B. Is President," which was later released as a single. After catching the attention of Def Jam's Russell Simmons, the duo were signed to Island Records. By 1987, they were ready to release their debut album together, "Paid in Full," which made it to the number 58 position on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has sold over a million copies, and it is considered to be one of the best hip hop albums of all time. It spawned the hit singles, "Eric B. Is President," "I Know You Got Soul," "I Ain't No Joke," "Paid in Full," and "Move the Crowd."
Following on their trail of success, Eric B. & Rakim released their second album, "Follow the Leader," which debuted at 22 on the U.S. Billboard Pop Albums chart and was later certified gold by the RIAA. This albums marked the creative peak of the duo, with a more evolved sound, musically and lyrically. Their third album, "Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em" was not as commercially successful as its predecessors, but most fans consider this album to be the most comprehensive and mature. It was even selected as one of the best rap albums by The Source. By 1992, Eric B. & Rakim released their final album together, "Don't Sweat the Technique," which produced the hit "Casualties of War." After disbanding, Rakim went on to embark on his solo career, releasing several successful albums during the late 90s and 2000s.
