Few sporting events can match the foot-stomping excitement of a professional basketball game. The hefty group of talent found on a pro basketball team commands a justifiable price for tickets. If you lack that sort of cash when nothing else will do but a basketball game, check out the powerhouse teams of the NBA G League, teams such as the Toronto Raptors 905.
The NBA G League
Simply put, the G League is professional-caliber basketball offered up in a family-oriented environment that won't empty your bank account to purchase tickets for the whole family. The G League is the NBA's official minor league, consisting of 26 NBA-affiliated franchise teams.
The league began in 2001 with only eight teams but expanded in 2017 by taking in the old NBA D-League in an effort to develop a farm system style minor league. Today, the 26 league teams are all either owned by an NBA team or affiliated with one. The term "G League" comes from the league's partnership with Gatorade.
The G League is the place for future NBA players to hone skills, develop natural talent to a professional level, and train toward a call-up to the big league. It also provides development opportunities for future coaches, referees and staff for the NBA's front office and affiliate teams.
The Raptors 905 are the "farm team" for the NBA's Toronto Raptors. The inclusion of 905 in their name gives a shoutout to the team's home location in Mississauga, Ontario. The area code for Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is 905; thus, the team name gives recognition to the more than 750,000 who call Mississauga home and are part of the 3.4 million living in the GTA.
The Raptors 905 were the eighth team from the former D-League brought into the G League. They were also the first G League to call a city outside the U.S. their home.
As the G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, the 905 play most of their home games at the Hershey Centre. They will occasionally host home games at the Air Canada Centre, the home venue for their parent Toronto Raptors club.
G League season
November through April is the running time for the NBA G League regular season. G League teams work with fluid rosters, meaning a team member is subject to call to the NBA level or assigned to another club at any time.
Once the season is underway, teams must limit their rosters to 10 players, with two additional player slots allocated for any players placed on the injury or inactive list. This limiting of starting team and reserves makes G League play even more exciting. It gives the crowds the opportunity to see a variety of players showcasing their best, and the fluid roster means new talent to cheer for throughout the season.
Other G League teams
