Renaud Garcia-Fons: the double bass answer to Paganini
Garcia-Fons was introduced to music from an early age. He started playing the piano at the age of five and later the classical guitar, switching to more contemporary rock styles during his adolescent years. At the age of sixteen, he discovered the upright bass and it has been his instrument of choice ever since. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris where François Rabbath helped him develop his unique arco bowing technique. Rabbath was a huge influence on Garcia-Fons, but the student acquired his own style with a melodic sensitivity that has earned him the nickname Paganini of the double bass. One of the finest performers on the upright bass, over the years he has played with the world’s leading jazz groups and orchestras and also performed intimate shows as part of a trio or solo. Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass, & Bass
Garcia-Fons continued to make a name for himself during the late-1980s and early-1990s by playing as part of the double bass ensemble L’Orchestre de Contrebasses—a group of six musicians who excelled in both live performances and with recorded releases such as 1981’s "Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass, Bass, & Bass". Alongside appearing with France’s Orchestre National de Jazz, he is an accomplished recording artist with solo albums such as his debut ‘Légendes’ (1992), ‘Fuera’ with Jean-Louis Matinier (1999), ‘La Linea Del Sur’ (2009), and ‘La Vie Devant Soi’ (2017). Garcia-Fons possesses the unique ability to transform the upright bass—known as an accompaniment to soloists—into an instrument worthy of everyone’s attention, but has complemented his solo work by performing with established jazz musicians including the Gerardo Núnez Trio and Dhafer Youssef; his unique fusion of jazz and world music has seen comparisons be drawn with the likes of Richard Bona.
