Rent is a rock opera with a huge cult following. The show takes place in gritty NYC during the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It includes both heart-wrenching ballads about challenging relationships and hilarious tunes that celebrate life and what makes people all different. Audiences will find themselves captivated by both the story and the incredible musical range of the show.
The successful play features lovable and unique characters, many of whom were groundbreaking at the time of the play's debut. While the story is based on Puccini's opera, La Boheme, it also takes elements from playwright Jonathan Larson's life prior to his success.
Rent Worcester's background
Jonathan Larson brought his own experiences as a composer and playwright to the story of Rent. For 10 years he worked as a waiter on the weekends and focused on his creative ideas during the week. He lived in an apartment without heat and had friends similar to many of the colorful yet tough characters in Rent.
In a cruel twist of fate, Larson died from an aortic dissection on the morning of the first "preview" performance of Rent's premiere off-Broadway production. In the days prior, he had experienced some symptoms and went to the ER, but doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him.
Kids in high schools can perform the less-sensitive portions of the production thanks to the release of a 2007 "school edition" for non-professional theaters. Many of the original Broadway cast members reprised their roles for the 2005 Rent movie.
Rent Worcester's notable awards
Rent has received many awards not only for its excellent music and performances, but also for its cultural impact. After its premiere in 1995, it won the Pulitzer Prize for drama. The same year it won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score at the Tony Awards.
The performers who originated many of the now well-known roles received multiple award nominations. Wilson Jermaine Heredia, who played Angel, a charismatic drag queen living with AIDS, won both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor.
Rent Worcester's notable cast members
Many of the cast members from the original production of Rent have gone on to have high-profile theatrical and film careers. Jesse L. Martin, who portrayed Tom Collins, went on to become the iconic Ed Green on the TV show Law & Order.
Playing bisexual and sassy Maureen Johnson in Rent was Idina Menzel's first professional theater gig. Now she is a Grammy award-winning singer, best known as the voice of Elsa in Frozen and Elphaba in Wicked. Taye Diggs also got his start in Rent and is now a television star, having been a major character on Private Practice and Murder in the First.
