Rex Orange County was born Alexander O'Connor in Grayshott, Hampshire, England. He derived the "Orange County" part of his musical persona from "The OC," which is what a teacher referred to him as. His interest in music started with singing in a school choir when he was 5. Eventually, this led to him exploring other forms of musical expression. As a teenager, he started playing guitar. Other instruments in Rex Orange County's repertoire include drums and piano. He's also experienced with recording music himself. His creative inclinations led to him enrolling as a drummer at the esteemed BRIT School. Due to a lack of percussionists, he was able to make connections for a wide range of assignments. Rex Orange County's first album was uploaded to Soundcloud in 2015. Called bcos u will never b free, it got lots of notice. Another popular release was his followup, Apricot Princess. The year his second album came out, Rex Orange County saw a big break with two contributions to Tyler, the Creator's highly acclaimed album Flower Boy. Since then, Rex Orange County has grown his fanbase as well as his mainstream recognition. He's recorded a cover of Randy Newman's classic "You've Got a Friend In Me" with Newman himself.
