Ria Mae: from Halifax to the world
Growing up in the Canadian province of Halifax, Mae would spend a lot of her childhood years writing music in the privacy of her bedroom as she transferred between schools. She taught herself guitar and the basics of songwriting but didn’t perform in front of a crowd until near the end of her time at high school. After graduating, she played in bars and clubs around Halifax and slowly accumulated a large and dedicated fan base, which led to the release of her first EP "Between the Bad" in 2009. She followed up in 2011 with her debut album "Under Your Skin", which she self-released and recorded with members of Canadian band Mir. The album went on to win the 2012 East Coast Music Award and its eponymous lead single featured as a finalist at Canadian Music Week. Mae’s 2013 song "Leaving Today" received another nomination for an East Coast Music Award and 2015’s "Clothes Off" was equally well-received, produced by Classified, who Mae admired after hearing his work with various notable artists including Chad Hatcher and David Myles. The song was nominated for Single of the Year at 2016’s Juno Awards and the Canadian singer-songwriter continued to work with producer Classified, also from Halifax, for her self-titled second album, which was released in 2016. She has performed on some of North America’s biggest stages alongside the likes of Buck 65 and Elle King and balances her artistic output with activist work, as a leading member of the charity Artists Against Racism, amongst other organisations. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Mae was celebrated for the music video of her single "Gold", which centred around an intimate and honest portrayal of a lesbian relationship.
