Riverdance "Tour Dates"
Riverdance is an internationally renown theatrical program consisting of a milieu of traditional Irish music and dance to a musical score created by the respected composer Bill Whalan. The dance troupe and production company that we know today as "Riverdance" originated from the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, which featured the popular Irish dance sensations Michael Flatley and Jean Butler.
After the company's auspicious beginnings, Flatley and Butler, along with their partners Moya Doherty and John McColgan, expanded the "Riverdance" retinue into a massive stage show that saw its first opening in February of 1995. Since then, Riverdance has performed on more than 450 occasions in theaters all over the world to the rapt attention of fans and admirers.
The Burgeoning Tradition of "Riverdance"
Rooted in a three-portion suite of traditional Irish music that is heavily influenced by the baroque genre of modern classical music, Riverdance is well respected for its classical credentials as well as for its innovative and lively performances. D_nal Lunny and Bill Whelan composed the early music for the troupe, enhancing the popular Irish folk band Planxty with an additional rock rhythm section that included electric bass, drums and a multi-part horn section. All of their compositions are accompanied by a troupe of distinguished ballet dancers. The resulting music was later released as a single under the name Planxty.
Riverdance first performed their career-making arrangement in 1994, a seven-minute long piece that led to a career and fame that has endured ever since. That performance reached more than 300 million viewers all over the world and thrust Riverdance to greatness, earning them a standing ovation from a theater packed with more than 4000 people. The group performed in London and Dublin in February and July of 1995. There, they solidified their fast-won reputation as a force to be reckoned with both in music and dance. Ticket sales topped more than 120,000 individual tickets for those five months alone. In May of that year, invited by Prince Charles, they performed for the 50th Anniversary VE Day celebration at the Royal Gala. Up until the early 2000s, when major cast changes took place, Riverdance continued to tour and perform to stunned and delighted audiences all over the globe.
