About Robert Plant

Robert Plant, born Robert Anthony Plant on 20 August 1948 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, grew up in England's West Midlands with an early hunger for American blues and rock and roll. He left home at 16 to sing with a series of local blues bands, absorbing the music of Willie Dixon, Robert Johnson, Bukka White, and Skip James, and played alongside drummer John Bonham in a group called Band of Joy. In 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page recruited Plant to front a rebuilt version of The Yardbirds. That lineup soon renamed itself Led Zeppelin, a band that went on to international success across the 1970s.

Plant served as Led Zeppelin's lead singer and lyricist from 1968 until the band's break-up in 1980, fronting era-defining albums that included Led Zeppelin II, the untitled fourth record known as Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy, and Physical Graffiti. With his long blond hair, bare-chested swagger, and kinetic stage presence, he became the template for the charismatic hard rock frontman, a 1970s peer of Mick Jagger and Roger Daltrey. Encyclopaedia Britannica credits him with creating the vocal sound that has defined much of hard rock and heavy metal singing, a high, raw, emotionally charged style built on the expressive palette of blues singers such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. His lyrics reached into Norse and Welsh mythology and the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien, and "Stairway to Heaven," whose words he wrote spontaneously at Headley Grange in 1970, topped polls as the greatest song of all time even though it was never released as a single. The band earned induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

After the band ended, Plant rebuilt his career on curiosity rather than nostalgia. His first two solo albums, Pictures at Eleven (1982) and The Principle of Moments (1983), each reached the top ten of the Billboard 200, and Now and Zen (1988) earned a triple Platinum certification as his biggest-selling solo record. He scored a 1984 top-ten single with The Honeydrippers' cover of "Sea of Love," rejoined Jimmy Page for two albums as Page and Plant, and spent the following decades exploring blues, folk, and world music with Strange Sensation, a revived Band of Joy, and the Sensational Space Shifters. His collaboration with bluegrass vocalist Alison Krauss, Raising Sand, won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2009, and the pair reunited for Raise the Roof in 2021. In 2019 he formed the acoustic group Saving Grace, which released its first studio album in 2025.

Who is Robert Plant?

Robert Plant is an English singer and songwriter, best known as the lead singer and lyricist of Led Zeppelin from the band's founding in 1968 until its break-up in 1980. Widely regarded as one of the greatest singers in rock music, he is known for a powerful, wide-ranging voice and raw, commanding stage performances that helped define the sound of hard rock and heavy metal vocals. In the decades since, he has built a solo career spanning blues, folk, country, and world music, including the Grammy-winning Raising Sand and Raise the Roof collaborations with Alison Krauss and the acoustic project Saving Grace.

What are Robert Plant's most popular songs?

Robert Plant's most popular songs span two eras: the Led Zeppelin classics he fronted from 1968 to 1980 and a solo run that produced its own radio staples. Highlights include:
  • "Stairway to Heaven," whose lyrics Plant wrote spontaneously at Headley Grange in 1970 and which has topped polls as the greatest song of all time
  • "Immigrant Song" and "Ramble On," drawn from Norse mythology and the works of J.R.R. Tolkien
  • "Black Dog" and "When the Levee Breaks," enduring fixtures of the Zeppelin catalog
  • "Big Log," "In the Mood," "Little by Little," and "Tall Cool One," his best-known solo singles
  • "Sea of Love," a 1984 top-ten hit with the Honeydrippers
  • "Please Read the Letter," re-recorded with Alison Krauss and winner of the 2009 Grammy Award for Record of the Year

What awards has Robert Plant won?

Robert Plant has won multiple Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Led Zeppelin in 1995. His major honors include:
  • Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2009 for Raising Sand with Alison Krauss
  • Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 2009 for "Please Read the Letter"
  • Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals in 2008 for "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)"
  • Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998 for "Most High" with Page and Plant
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction with Led Zeppelin in 1995
  • Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2009 for services to music
He also topped Hit Parader's 2006 list of the 100 Greatest Metal Vocalists of All Time, placed among Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers in 2008, was voted the greatest voice in rock by Planet Rock listeners in 2009, and received the Americana Music Association UK's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.

What is Robert Plant's fan community like?

Robert Plant's fan community spans generations, from listeners who lived through Led Zeppelin's 1970s peak to newer fans drawn in by his roots-focused solo work. The enormous public demand for the band's one-off, full two-hour reunion set at the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert in London showed how deep that fanbase runs, and Plant has kept the audience with him by pouring his energy into music-first projects like Saving Grace instead of a full Led Zeppelin reunion tour. His influence on later rock vocalists, from Freddie Mercury and Axl Rose to Jeff Buckley and Jack White, keeps pulling new listeners toward his records and his live shows. Away from the stage, Plant is a lifelong Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter who became a vice-president of the club in 2009, and his long fascination with Welsh history and mythology adds another layer of connection for fans who share those interests. Whenever a new run of Robert Plant tickets becomes available, the audiences that turn out tend to span the full arc of his career.
