Sponsored by the MGM Grand Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, the competition brings together teams from across the Division I basketball landscape that might not otherwise face each other. The results of the games count toward the teams' regular-season standings. The inaugural tournament took place in 2014 at the 16,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena, located within the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In 2017, the event switched to the newly built T-Mobile Arena, located on the Las Vegas Strip. What is the format of the MGM Grand Main Event?

The MGM Grand Main Event schedule is divided up into a heavyweight bracket and a middleweight bracket. The heavyweight bracket consists of teams from major power or mid-major conferences while the middleweight bracket consists of teams from smaller conferences. The heavyweight bracket consists of an actual tournament in which the winners of the opening games advance to the finals while the losers play in a consolation game. The teams thus have a clear ranking from first to fourth at the end of the tournament. The middleweight bracket, on the other hand, has traditionally alternated between a tournament style and a round-robin format in which one team is guaranteed to play the other two. Each team in both brackets will play exactly two games regardless of whether the teams win or lose the first game.
