With a voice that has been described as "soulful," "haunting" and "reminiscent of Paolo Nutini and early Tom Waits," Ryan McMullan is one of Northern Ireland's rising stars in the singer-songwriter scene. Accompanying himself skillfully on both the guitar and the keyboard, the humble, kind 20-something made a meteoric rise from signing in pubs and bars near his hometown of Portaferry to selling out major venues and touring with prominent artists such as Foy Vance and Ed Sheeran. Capturing audiences with a powerful yet gentle voice that Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody has described as "the voice of an angel," the Ryan McMullan tour has stops scheduled throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. Catch this new talent live while he's on the rise!
Ryan McMullan's background
Hailing from the seaside town of Portaferry in Northern Ireland, Ryan McMullan grew up surrounded by music in a household that wasn't shy about its appreciation for the art form. He picked up the guitar and began to experiment with vocals when he was about 15, taking up the keyboard just a few years later. As a teenager in Portaferry, he teamed up with some of his mates to play in his first band, performing at various local talent shows. He fondly recalls attending certain concerts, such as a 2006 Snow Patrol performance at Ward Park and a Foy Vance show in Washington, D.C., that he credits in part with awakening his passion for music.
After completing a degree in civil engineering, McMullan turned his attention to music full time. In the final years of his schooling, he found music increasingly on his mind and began to experiment with songwriting. Once leaving university, he was able to truly focus on music for the first time and began to play his songs at local pubs and bars. After the release of his debut EP, Listen, which included favorites such as "Holding ME Down," McMullan began to experience increasing success, even being asked to support major touring acts, including artists he'd looked up to his entire life. Soon, he was playing at major venues, even selling some out, and leaving behind the pub scene where he'd gotten his start.
