Prior to Division I, they played in the MAAC. For the 2003-04 season, Sacred Heart moved to the Atlantic Hockey conference. Since then, the team has compiled a total of three 20-plus-win seasons. The 2016-17 season was the first season that Sacred Heart played at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut, which is now their home stadium. In recent years, the Pioneers have been in a rebuilding phase. As of the 2019-20 season, the Pioneers became a nationally ranked team, cracking the Top 30 in the RPI poll. That same season, the Pioneers were also ranked as a Top 20 team in the US College Hockey Online poll. They have also put together impressive non-conference wins against teams like Yale. Who is the head coach of the Sacred Heart Pioneers hockey team?C.J. Marottolo is the head coach of the Sacred Heart Pioneers and has held the post since the 2009-10 season. Prior to his career at Sacred Heart, Marottolo was an assistant and associate coach for the Yale Bulldogs. Yale has one of the oldest and most respected programs in college hockey, dating back to the 1800s. Marottolo's experience there made him a great fit for a school that is still developing its hockey program and reputation. In his first season at Sacred Heart, Marottolo posted a 21-13-4 record. Since then, he's led the team to seven other seasons in which they've won more than 10 games. C.J. Marottolo is a graduate of Northeastern University. His assistant coaches are Scott McDougall, Paul Kirtland and Craig Height.

The building is a multi-purpose facility and can also be configured for sports like basketball. When it's configured for hockey, the Webster Bank Arena can accommodate up to 8,500 spectators. This is a completely modern facility, featuring amenities like suite seating and concession options. Sacred Heart has plans for an on-campus ice hockey facility for the men's and women's teams, and it is projected to open in 2022.
