Seibu Lions History
The Saitama Seibu Lions have changed their team name quite a few times since their existence in 1950. For the first year, they weren’t even Lions but rather the Nishitetsu Clippers. The following year they merged with another team to be called the Nishitetsu Lions. It seemed like the Lions mascot was fitting for the team and they stepped up their game, quickly becoming one of the more dominant teams in the Pacific League throughout the 50s. Unfortunately, the 60s weren’t as successful for the team and going in to the 70s many of their players were caught up in the notorious Black Mist game-fixing scandal, causing them to finish in dead-last for three years in a row. In ’73, the team was sold again and renamed the Taiheiyo Club Lions until 1976. For just one year they were called the Crown Light Lions before they were given their current team name, the Seibu Lions in 1979. Despite finishing in last place that year, the Seibu Lions were fierce and started showing their true colors and talent. From 1982 onward, the team won multiple Japan Series and league championships earning themselves the nickname, “Invincible Seibu”.
Daisuke Matsuzaka Honored at the Seibu Dome after Red Sox Deal
Lions fans felt a profound sadness upon the news that their beloved Matsuzaka would be leaving them for the Boston Red Sox in 2007. But what they didn’t know is what the deal would leave them with! The Lions organization invested money in fixing up the Seibu Dome, which was one of the oldest and most run down in the country. The stadium now boasts for an HD scoreboard screen, VIP sections, new concession stands, and the nicest bathrooms you’ve probably ever seen at a baseball stadium! That´s right: floor-to-ceiling doors and walls, bidets, top-of-the-line hand dryers, and even heated toilet seats! How’s that for a way to honor Daisuke Matsuzaka?
