The Salem Keizer Volcanoes are the Short-Season Class-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's San Francisco Giants. The franchise began play in 1973 in Bellingham, Washington as an affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. After four seasons the team was taken over by the Seattle Mariners when they won four league titles between 1977 and 1994. That team saw Mariners icons like Edgar Martinez and Ken Griffey Jr. take the field. The San Francisco Giants became the parent organization in 1995 and have been affiliated with the team ever since. The Bellingham Giants existed for two seasons before the team relocated to Keizer, Oregon. The team was renamed the Volcanoes and has gone on an unprecedented run of success. The Salem Keizer Volcanoes won the Northwest League championship five times between 1997 and 2009 and have made a postseason appearance in three of the last nine seasons. In 2019 Volcanoes went 46-30 and made it to the playoffs before losing in the first round. After his college career, Sakata was taken in the first round of the 1975 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. Sakata spent 11 seasons playing in the Majors with the Brewers, Orioles, Athletics and Yankees and even played in the 1983 World Series. After his playing days were behind him, Sakata got into coaching and has managed in the Athletics and Rockies systems before joining the Giants' organization.
