Located in the heart of Sherwood Park, the Salinas Sports Complex has been thrilling Rodeo audiences for more than 100 years. Now, it's also drawing concert fans, BBQ lovers and racing fans to its doors.
The Salinas Sports Complex began with a rodeo. In fact, it has been home to the California Rodeo since 1911, though it has evolved from a wooden stadium into the modern complex that you see today during that time. The land had been donated to the city by the Sherwood Family, who had only one restriction on the donation - that a race be held on the property at least every couple of years. The agreement stuck, and when faced with the task of updating the facilities in the 1990s, the Rodeo Association decided to fundraise in order to build a world-class community facility that could host sporting events and family entertainment throughout the year.
The California Rodeo continues to thrive at the Salinas Sports Complex. Bolstered by its long history, this updated facility welcomes fans to enjoy amazing rodeo feats. The fields on the complex are also large enough to accommodate major soccer matches. Huge concerts appealing to a wide range of music lovers are common here, with acts like Kid Rock, Alan Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Luis Miguel and Aerosmith taking the stage. It's also an ideal spot for chili cook-offs, beer festivals, RV shows, home and garden shows, Renaissance festivals, art festivals and barbecue challenges. The convertible complex also hosts monster truck shows, auto racing and motorcycle racing. No matter what brings you to the Salinas Sports Complex, be sure to get your tickets on StubHub early so that you won't miss out on the fun!
The main portion of the Salinas Sports Complex is the renovated Rodeo stadium. With a capacity of over 16,600 in the grandstands and a stellar reputation, the rodeo events here draw the biggest names on the circuit. It's also the perfect spot to see music concerts or other sporting events. The Complex also provides access to soccer, baseball and softball fields. And with its flexible layout, the property can be converted to accommodate racing events. There is also an 80-stall barn that can be rented by residents.
Salinas is primarily known for its considerable contributions to agriculture, viticulture and literature. John Steinbeck was born here, and the National Steinbeck Center and the annual Steinbeck Festival are located near the Victorian home where he spent his childhood. It's also California's largest grower of chardonnay grapes, making it a vital part of the Central Coast's wine industry. Couple that with the fantastic food and vineyards of nearby Monterey and Carmel, and this area is an epicurean's delight. Visitors to Salinas will also love popping over to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, driving the famed 17-Mile Drive or attending the events of the Monterey Jazz Festival or the California Roots Festival at the Monterey Fairgrounds. Even a trip up to San Francisco to see the Giants play at AT&T Park is an easy prospect.
The Salinas Sports Complex was once home to the California Jaguars of the United Soccer League.
