Sam Houston Race Park is a horse racing track, but it's also used for musical concerts and festivals, most of them with a country music theme. It's located in unincorporated northwest Houston at 7575 North Sam Houston Parkway West. Sam Houston Race Park opened on April 24, 1994. It's named for Sam Houston, who served as the president of the Republic of Texas. The race park has two horse racing seasons: thoroughbred horse racing runs from late January until early March and American Quarter Horses race run from the beginning of March through the middle of May. The remainder of the year, the park is open for simulcast racing from across the United States. On days with simulcast racing, there's no entry fee into the park. During the off-racing season, the park has been home to the ZiegenBock Music Festival for 16 years. The race park has also featured performances by Gary Allan and the Eli Young Band.
