Angel of Music
Sarah Brightman first built a successful career on the stage. At the age of 21, she auditioned for and earned a role in the West End production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous musical Cats, which propelled her to superstar status. Several years later, she was cast as Christine Daae in Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, one of the highest-earning musicals of all time. The role was written specifically with her voice in mind. Brightman was also cast in the 1990 Webber musical Aspects of Love. In 1988, she embarked on a solo musical career with the release of her debut album, The Trees They Grow So High, which consisted primarily of European folk songs. Her 1996 duet with Andrea Bocelli on the hit song "Time to Say Goodbye" became a career milestone. The subsequent album on which it was released, the 1997 Timeless, sold more than a million copies in the US alone and became a top performer in Europe. Brightman and Bocelli then recorded a German and Italian language version of the song, which sold more than 12 million copies alone. Following her collaboration with Bocelli, Brightman released a series of albums that achieved international success: Eden in 1998, La Luna in 2000, Harem in 2003 and Symphony in 2008. Sarah Brightman received a Grammy nomination for the 1986 Best New Classical Artist. She has won a Golden Lion Award, a Golden Europa Award, an Echo Award and the New York Film Festival award for Best Music Documentary and Best Music Video.
