Sarah White background
Sarah White was raised near the Blue Ridge Mountains, in Virginia and West Virginia. She became a part of the Charlottesville, Va., music scene in the 1990s. White's early recordings were intentionally lo-fi and recorded on simple four-tracks. She favored a DIY type sonic landscape and was signed to a small indie label. Almost exactly since she emerged, White has been followed by anyone with an interest in alt-country and Americana music. White is known for infusing traditional American folk music with an indie-rock sensibility. Her music can be fun, but White is also not afraid to get introspective and to peer into some fairly dark spaces.
Sarah White milestones
As White developed as an artist, her sound became richer and fuller while still retaining an indie edge. Her 2000 release Bluebird garnered her positive reviews and compared her to artists like Edith Frost. Critics loved both the music and the lyrical content. It was dark in places and showcased traditional Americana techniques like finger-picking guitar. In 2004, White began working with a full backing band, billed as Sarah White and The Pearls. In addition to her original songs, White has also released an album of covers and standards. Titled Pickin' Strummin' And Singin'...The Versatile Sarah White, this album shows off her range. In 2006, White's original song "Sweetheart" was named best song at the Newsong Festival held by the public radio show Mountain Stage. In 2018, White released High Flyer, which featured guest vocals by Dave Matthews, Carl Anderson and Michael York. This was her first album in over a decade.
