Saweetie brings girl power to teen rap music
Saweetie is the performance name of American rapper Diamonté Harper. She specialises in hip hop, using heavily sampled backing tracks and making extensive use of remixes of sections from songs by other artists. She has a street-hustle attitude that comes through strongly in her music, although she raps mainly about love and relationships and has a young, mainly female fan base. She's become a sensationally big artist in a very short time, courtesy of some important collaborations and particularly her strategy of recording new raps over the existing music of more established artists. A stellar career on digital music channels
Saweetie began as an Instagram rap star, choosing to post her homemade raps over well-known hip-hop songs there rather than use the more traditional route of YouTube. She was noticed for one song in particular, where she took the beat from the 2016 Khia song, "My Neck, My Back (Lick It)" and rapped her own lyrics over it. While it was hugely successful, she took the song a step further and rewrote it, releasing it as "Icy Girl" the following year on Soundcloud. It cross-pollinated to YouTube, where it had gathered 79 million views by the end of 2019, and brought her squarely to the attention of the recording industry – in particular one Max Gousse, an A&R director and record producer. He became her manager and guided her next few releases, also on digital platforms. From there she began signing ad and endorsement deals, despite not yet having released an actual album, and her live performances began in earnest as well. A massive boost to platinum single success
Saweetie had an absolutely massive breakthrough in 2018 when she was featured in an ad for Fenty Beauty, the cosmetics company owned by Rihanna. This might not have had the impact it did but for the fact that it was shown at the half-time interval of the American Football Superbowl, which is the moment in the USA when you're likely to be watched by more people than at any other time of the year. This rocketed her to instant national fame and she was immediately signed to Warner Bros. She released her first album, entitled "High Maintenance", in 2018, with "Icy Girl" once again the most prominent song, refreshed and re-recorded. It earned her a gold disc initially, and by 2019 the song had gone platinum. She then released a slew of singles, sampling many other artists including Zaytoven and Petey Pablo, further widening her appeal. You'll immediately realise what's so special about her when you buy Saweetie tickets on StubHub and get to her show.
