Based on the film of the same name, School of Rock - The Musical portrays the story of fictional character, Dewey Finn, a rock star hopeful who finds himself kicked out of his rock band. In the musical, created by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Finn poses as a substitute teacher at a prep school. During his time in the classroom he discovers all the musical talent his students have and makes the decision to enlist his fifth grade class to form a rock group and conquer the Battle of the Bands.
Due to the popularity of this musical and the well-known musical numbers, such as "I'm Too Hot for You," and "Children of Rock," it has toured around the world, with stops throughout the United States, including Columbus, Ohio, New York, on and off Broadway, and throughout the United Kingdom.
School of Rock history
School of Rock - The Musical is based on the 2003 film, which was the highest-grossing comedy of all time until 2015. The School of Rock musical achieved perfection at the Gramercy Theatre in New York during the summer of 2015 before it officially opened at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway in December of that same year. This marked the very first time that Andrew Lloyd Webber premiered a show on the Great White Way since the 1971 premier of Jesus Christ Superstar.
The School of Rock musical debuted on the West End at the New London Theatre on November 14, 2016, receiving the highest reviews ever during the composer's career. In a move considered unprecedented before the opening of the Broadway production, Lloyd Webber granted permission for youth groups and schools in the U.S. to apply for the right to perform the show.
School of Rock biggest hits
One of the biggest hits from the School of Rock Musical was "You're In the Band." This is the spirited audition piece that gives Dewey the opportunity to discover the amazing talent present in his classroom. Some of the other hits that even those who have never seen the musical or movie likely know include, "Where Did the Rock Go," "Give Up Your Dreams" and "Variation 7/Children of Rock."
School of Rock noteworthy awards
School of Rock - The Musical has received countless awards and recognitions. In 2016 alone, it received nominations for four Tony Awards, best musical, best original score, best book of a musical, and best actor in a musical. It also received a nomination for five Drama Desk Awards, an Outer Critics Circle award and six Broadway.com Audience awards. The musical has also received several awards from London-based awards groups.
