After a successful debut on Broadway, the School of Rock Dallas tour will make a stop in this Texas city, bringing with it an electrifying rock soundtrack filled with guitar riffs and foot-stomping fun. Older children and adults alike should enjoy this rock 'n' roll musical, based on the 2003 movie of the same name that starred Jack Black and Joan Cusack. It tells an uplifting story about always pursuing your dreams and having faith in your talents, even when there are many obstacles to overcome.
School of Rock Dallas background
Dewey, the star of School of Rock (played by Rob Colletti in the touring production), is a guitarist newly out of a job after his bandmates oust him. Worried that he has no way to pay his rent, Dewey accepts an offer to teach at an elite elementary school, even though he has no teaching experience and the invitation was a mistake. At the school, his inexperience is evident, but he soon discovers his students' hidden musical talents and focuses on forming them into a rock band to compete against his former group in a Battle of the Bands. Along the way, the academy's principal becomes a love interest (Lexie Dorsett Sharp), and he teaches her and the kids to unleash their inner rocker and embrace their individuality.
School of Rock Dallas production
It took a little more than two years after he bought the show's rights for renowned composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, to debut School of Rock at the Winter Garden Theater in New York City in 2015. Along the way, and with the help of lyricist Glenn Slater, he wrote 14 new songs for the musical. Webber, known for multiple hit songs and shows, including Evita ("Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" and The Phantom of the Opera ("The Music of the Night"), opened School of Rock at the New London Theatre in London in 2017.
In addition to Webber and Slatter, Julian Fellowes, perhaps best known for Downton Abbey, wrote the book for School of Rock. Other members of the production's creative team include Joann M. Hunter (choreographer), Laurence Connor (director), John Rigby (music supervisor), Natasha Katz (lighting director), Anna Louizos (scene/costume designer), Mick Potter (sound designer) and Martyn Axe (music director for the School of Rock tour).
