The Classy, Thoughtful, and Engaging Folk Rock of Scott Matthews
Classy, thoughtful, and engaging -- they're all words the press have used to characterise Wolverhampton-born singer and guitarist Scott Matthews' lyrical, melodic, and sometimes melancholy music. The award-winning artist eases gently from one style to the next, drawing on folk, rock, and blues with a touch of the Beatles and Led Zeppelin for flavor.
Schedule
Matthews toured the UK extensively in support of his first album, including appearances to support the Foo Fighters during their UK tour. He also tours throughout Europe, playing cities such as Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Paris, Manchester, and London.
Trivia
Matthews started playing acoustic guitar at age 7, and took up the electric guitar four years later. He plays a large variety of instruments on his albums including guitar, sitar, theremin, harmonica, percussion and piano. His first radio airplay came as guitarist for a song penned by his older brother, Darren; Matthews was 14 at the time.
Matthews pressed just 20 copies of his own self-produced demo CD, Passing Stranger, which would also become the name of his debut full-length album. His first live show attracted the interest in a manager and two fellow musicians were so impressed with Matthews they formed a new record label solely to promote him.
Band/Singer
Scott Matthews plays multiple instruments, but you'll most often see him playing guitar onstage as he sings. You may find him backed by a full orchestra, or with a single inventive cellist behind him. As an example, the backing band for his debut album included two violins, viola, cello, accordion, tabla, saxophone and clarinet. But ultimately, Matthews remains a hard-gigging solo performer that you can count on for thoughtful lyrics and a classy, engaging performance.
Breakthrough
Matthews's first album, Passing Stranger, was released not once but twice in the same year -- first on San Remo records, then as a re-release on Island Records. Tracks from the album garnered him regular airplay from BBC DJs Janice Long, Mark Radcliffe and Bob Harris, then a chance to play sessions for BBC Radio. The single "Elusive" proved particularly popular, drawing extensive airplay and several picks as Single of the Week. "Elusive" also won Matthews a 2007 Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically & Lyrically.
Hit Albums
Matthews' first album remains his biggest success, having made it to number 45 on the UK charts. Two tracks from that album -- "Elusive" and "Eyes Wider Than Before" -- remain the most popular of his career. "Obsession Never Sleeps", from his third album What the Night Delivers, has also proven to be very popular. A limited run of 500 copies of Matthews's 2014 album, Home Part 1, were released as vinyl records.
Matthews is also well known for his extensive touring, especially within the UK. He's travelled in support of major acts including the Foo Fighters, Rufus Wainwright, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss.
