Sebastian Maniscalco grew up in Arlington Heights, a Chicago suburb, in an Italian immigrant family that would later become the backbone of his comedy. His father Salvatore, a hairstylist, came to the United States from Sicily as a teenager, and the old-school household he ran handed his son a lifetime of material. After graduating from Northern Illinois University in 1995, Maniscalco moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and spent years working open mics in bars and bowling alleys while waiting tables at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
A turning point came in 2005, when he became a regular at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. The specials followed: his first, Sebastian Live, arrived in 2009, and a run of Showtime releases came next, including What's Wrong with People?, Aren't You Embarrassed?, and Why Would You Do That?. His memoir Stay Hungry landed in 2018, with a Netflix special of the same name following in 2019. All told, Maniscalco has released seven comedy specials.
His screen career grew alongside the stand-up. Maniscalco made his feature film debut in The House in 2017, appeared in the Academy Award-winning Green Book in 2018, and shared scenes with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Al Pacino in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. He co-wrote and co-starred in About My Father (2023), a comedy loosely based on his own life with De Niro playing his dad, and he starred in two seasons of the series Bookie. Add hosting the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, a Discovery+ series exploring food culture, and voice work in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and IF, and the range shows.
