The festival debuted in the spring of 2013, in Atlanta, Ga., and is now held in Central Park in downtown Atlanta. Since its inception, the festival has extended from a two-day to three-day event to accommodate crowds of enthusiastic music fans looking to enjoy the Shaky Knees Music Festival lineup. Tim Sweetwood was a booking manager working for Masquerade Music Park when he launched the Shaky Knees Music Festival. The booking manager is also an Atlanta native and music guru. He enjoyed the music festivals in the area but felt it was lacking a proper indie music festival. There were indie festivals in other states but nothing in the southeast. The indie music festival has grown so big that it inspired two sister festivals, Shaky Beats and and Shaky Boots. The festival is so popular it was named one of the 50 Must-See Music Festivals by
