An unsurpassed Brazilian popular music diva
Simone is probably best known for her 1979 hit song, "Começar de novo", the theme to a massively popular Brazilian TV soap opera at the time. The far-reaching consequences of its local success were nothing short of astonishing. Not only has it become one of the defining BPM songs, it also reached the ears of US superstars like Barbra Streisand, who recorded an English version of the song, renaming it "The Island". Sarah Vaughan then did a cover of this cover, and so on. It won the Brazilian acceptance into an elite club of the most revered and respected female singers of all time, and was the beginning of a career that would surpass that of most other Brazilian popular music artists. She hinted at this all the way back in 1982 when she achieved the distinction of being the first female singer in any genre to draw a capacity crowd to Rio's Maracanazinho Stadium. By this time, Simone tickets had become highly prized, a fact she emphatically underlined a year later when she packed 150,000 fans into the Quinta da Boa Vista public park.
"One of the world's greatest singers"
Simone is known as a "romantic singer" within the Brazilian popular music genre. Her songs are typical of this cultural tradition, heavy on sentiment and emotion, and delivered with dramatic expression and pathos. It has an operatic element to it, in much the same way as the great R&B singers rely on the vocal gospel tradition. Think of someone like Julio Iglesias, whose music, although coming from a Spanish tradition, shares many similarities with the more mellow side of BPM that Simone portrays. He's also been on record as citing her as one of his favourite female singers. Quincy Jones, one of the world's great musical visionaries went a step further when he declared her "one of the world's greatest singers". By now you should have realised that whether you know her name or not, Simone tickets are must-haves if you're a lover of any kind of romantic pop balladry.
