Founded in 1971, Sister Sledge are regular performers in the United States and around the world.
Sister Sledge's career milestones
Formed by the daughters of the Broadway tap dancer Edwin Sledge, and Florez Sledge, an actress, Sister Sledge is made up of Debbie, Kim and Kathy Sledge, their sister Joni having passed away in 2017. The girls sang in church and began touring the eastern seaboard of the United States as youngsters, with their mother acting as a manager. The band put out their first single “Time Will Tell” on a local music label in 1971. However, it was not until 1975, two years after the sisters released “Mama Never Told Me”, that they achieved a hit – it got into the top 20 in the UK.
Now recognized as viable hit makers, Sister Sledge went on to perform at some notable events. This included a support slot for the funk legend James Brown, ahead of the famous 'Rumble in the Jungle' boxing match. They went on to release “Together” in 1977, which was a minor hit.
Sister Sledge's breakthrough and mainstream success
Sister Sledge teamed up with Chic's song writing duo in the late 1970s and came up with the album We Are Family, which spawned the aforementioned single. It went to number two in the US singles charts and got to number three in the album charts. “He's the Greatest Dancer” peaked at number nine in America and a third single from the LP, “Lost In Music”, was a big hit in Europe.
During the 1980s, the band's disco sound altered somewhat in response to changing musical fashions. Sister Sledge scored another big hit with “Frankie” in 1985. Produced by Rogers, it was written for them by Denise Rich, famous for her work with Chaka Khan and Diana Ross, among others.
A popular live act, Sister Sledge has appeared on the main stage at the Glastonbury Festival before. They have performed for the Pope, as well as the US President. The group continues to take to the stage as a three-piece.
